“Serving the Flathead Valley for Over 30 Years”

In 1974 Dorothy Fisher, Betty Brass, Barbara Altig and Glena Schaefer inherited their mother Blanch Maxine Tonnar’s aparral store, “Tonners Toggery”. Tonnar’s Toggery was built during the construction and boom years of the Hungry Horse Dam.

Four years later In 1979 the four sisters decided to rent out the Tonner’s Toggery building to Dorothy Fisher’s daughter Patsy, and her husband Gilbert Washburn, and their partners Russ and Bobby Walter who started the Trapline Lumber Company. The lumber business grew quickly and eventually evolved into a lumber yard and a Second Hand Store just along highway two between Martin City and Hungry Horse, Montana.

Eventually the Walter family decided to go their own way and Gilbert and Patsy took sole ownership of the small company. The Washburn’s decided to get out of the lumber business and moved their Second Hand Store to Columbia Falls under the name “Gils Store”.

Over time Gils Store added more furniture to their second hand selection. With the new additions of more furniture and mattresses Gils Store out grew its Columbia Falls location.   In search of more space, Gilbert and Patsy found a location with a larger warehouse along Highway 40 between Whitefish and Columbia Falls.

Business was good and Gils was becoming a household name but in the summer of 1992 Gils Store burned down due to an electrical fire.   The entire building and inventory were lost.

By winter of the same year with hard work and perseverance Gilbert and Patsy rebuilt and started again.

The next few years Gils belief in offering his customers the same quality furniture for less paid off. With the business doing well and the growing Flathead Valley, Gil and Patsy decided to purchase the adjacent property to the east of them and built the Gils Store as you know it today.

Today Gils continues to do business in the same location on Highway 40 between Whitefish and Columbia Falls. Gils continues to value it’s customers offering name brand furniture and mattresses for less. Gils got it.
